An Example Verbatims report pulls example quotes from one or more open-ended questions in your survey. Where a cross-tab tells you how many respondents said something, an Example Verbatims report shows you what they actually said — edited quotes with demographics and tags, so each verbatim carries the context of who said it and which topic it belongs to.
It works hand in hand with the platform's automatic open-end coding: the topics available in the report are the codes assigned to that question's responses. If you haven't read it yet, start with Open end coding in MX8 Labs.
For a qualitative text interview, the source response is the respondent's complete assembled interview transcript. Example Verbatims receives that transcript, not an isolated opening answer or follow-up turn, and the respondent contributes one response to the analytical base. Individual turns remain available in raw response outputs.
Creating an Example Verbatims report
From the Reports tab of your survey (or a project's reports), click + CREATE. The dialog opens on Select Report Type — choose the Example Verbatims card ("Verbatim report with edited quotes, demographics, and tags").
The second step asks for the report basics:
- Name — the name of the report.
- Project — the project for this report.
- Respondent Statuses — which respondents are included: Complete, Unterminated, or All. Complete is the default and the right choice for most studies.
- Report window start and Report window end — optional date limits, useful for scoping a tracker to a single wave.
Click Save. The new report is selected in the report list and the Edit Report dialog opens on the Scope step so you can configure it straight away.
Configuring the report
The editor has three steps: Scope → Layout → Relabelling. Use the stepper or Save + Next to advance, and Save to finish. There is no separate Analysis or Significance step.
In Scope, set the report name, respondent statuses and optional reporting dates. Project reports also choose surveys and whether respondent IDs identify the same people across those surveys. Enter dates in the local timezone shown beneath the fields.
In Layout, choose:
- Open-ended questions — one or more eligible questions to draw quotes from.
- Examples per question — from 1 to 5; the default is 1.
- Random seed — starts at 42. Use Generate a new seed to request a different selection of examples.
- Demographic questions — answers to include alongside each quote.
- Excluded tags — tags to omit from the report's grouping.
In Relabelling, edit the available tag labels and response values associated with the selected open ends and demographics. The response table shows Question, Original value and Report as. These labels affect the report, not the original survey wording or respondent answers.
Topics come from open-end coding
The code frame still comes from open-end coding. Refine coding there when the categories need changing. The report editor now uses the Layout selections above; it does not have the previous single Open Ended Question, Requested Demos or Open Ended Topics checklist.
