Every part of the industry—methods, workflows, vendor models, even the calendar of insight—quietly assumes that research will always be slow, expensive, and difficult to execute repeatedly.

Across the insight lifecycle, tasks that previously consumed analyst days—survey creation, programming, QA, cleaning, coding, charting, and first-pass analysis—are now executed in minutes. The result isn’t simply faster turnaround; it’s a fundamental shift in what is possible. When the operational friction disappears, the cadence, scale, and ambition of research change with it.
Before they deployed our research platform, Wunderkind ran two large studies per year. They now run multiple studies per month. Nothing changed about their appetite for insight. What changed was the cost and effort required to generate it. Once automation compressed the work, it became natural to ask more questions, explore more ideas, and validate decisions more frequently.
This dynamic is beginning to play out across the industry. As cycle times collapse, organisations start to move from fixed waves to rolling learning. As marginal costs fall, they expand the number of concepts, messages, segments, and hypotheses they test. As automation absorbs the mechanical labour, insight teams shift their time toward interpretation and decision-making rather than production. The pattern is clear: when research becomes easier to run, teams ask more questions; when it becomes cheaper to run, they ask broader questions; when it becomes faster to run, they ask questions continuously.
Synthetic sample is going to reduce this further. Surveys aren’t short because we believe short surveys are inherently better; they’re short because humans abandon long ones. Automation helps here too—by handling repetitive labour today, and by enabling early-stage exploration with model-driven simulations tomorrow. Synthetic techniques are not a replacement for real consumers, but they will increasingly shoulder the parts of a questionnaire that humans find too long, too detailed, or too cognitively demanding. This opens up a frontier that was previously inaccessible: scenario testing, combinatorial ideation, stress-testing assumptions, and validating the “edges” of a category before committing real budget to a full study.
The strategic implication for insight leaders is significant. Annual and semi-annual research cycles were never strategic choices; they were operational necessities. As constraints fall away, cadence will follow. Large, infrequent studies will give way to smaller, more frequent learning loops. The debate will shift from sample-size optimisation to model-quality optimisation. And the value of the insights function will increasingly be defined not by the studies it commissions, but by the speed and sophistication with which it interprets the signals those studies generate.
Ultimately, the primary bottleneck in research will no longer be fieldwork, time, or cost. It will be imagination—the organisation’s ability to generate questions worthy of investigation. Teams prepared for this shift will explore more widely and iterate faster than their peers. Teams that hold onto traditional cadence and structure will find themselves constrained not by the market, but by their own assumptions.
The real question is no longer “How do we make research faster and cheaper?”
It’s “What would we do differently if research were no longer the constraint?”
